Sweetening with Xylitol and Stevia

Perhaps you would like to cut down on your sugar intake but still like your tea sweet and don’t want to completely forgo sugar in home-made cakes either. Sweetening with xylitol and stevia

Birch sugar, also known as xylitol—our alternative sweetener!

Sugar can be found in many foods, and hardly anyone would prefer to live entirely without it. However, there are alternatives to using regular sugar as a sweetener. Also known as xylitol, birch sugar is one of these alternative sweeteners. With less calories than regular sugar, birch sugar is a healthier alternative and a go-to sweetener for diabetics. That said, it is just as sweet and looks very similar to regular sugar. Raab Vitalfood’s birch sugar is sourced in Finland from European hardwood trees such as birch. You can use xylitol to sweeten drinks, but it is also ideal for cooking or baking (apart from preparing yeast dough). Xylitol also occurs naturally in fruits and berries.

Stevia—one sweetener, many different forms

Stevia is another example for an alternative sweetener. Raab Vitalfood’s stevia is available as an extract, a liquid or as tablets. Stevia is native to South America, where indigenous people have been using it as sweetener for hundreds of years. Today it is also produced in other regions such as Asia. Stevia extract is a great alternative to sugar for sweetening hot or cold drinks, or desserts. The advantage of stevia in comparison to regular sugar is its enhanced sweetening power. The sweetening power of just one gram of the extract equals that of roughly 66 lumps of sugar. For this reason, we recommend stevia liquid to those who prefer to sweeten more carefully. Three drops equal one lump of sugar. Conscious eaters who don’t want to ban sugar from their diet entirely should try the sweetening power of the stevia plant or the low-calorie birch sugar (also known as xylitol) without losing out on the delicious flavours of hot drinks and sweet desserts!
